There are several different reasons for wanting boxes and shipping supplies and the reason will affect the type of packaging materials you need. For example, are you moving home or moving the office; do you need shipping supplies for sales; are you shipping to the home market or internationally?

If you are shipping for any other purpose, you should buy new, professional corrugated shipping boxes. These corrugated shipping boxes are not expensive, but they will better protect your goods and look more professional.

If you are moving your home or office goods in a shared container, say, abroad, you should consider getting specially printed corrugated shipping boxes or and custom printed tape so that your boxes are easy to recognise.

When packaging and shipping abroad, you will need to pay special attention to the customs declaration and packing list, so bear this is mind when choosing your box, unless you put the box into a padded envelope or bag.

When moving your office, or moving your house in a professional manner, you can either have your property packed for you or you can do it yourself. If you decide to do it yourself, do it like a professional or the insurance may not pay out, if there is any damage.

Make sure that anything that is subject to damage, like a printer or a television, is put into a box that fits it well and then stuff padding like newsprint and tissue paper around the item. Seal the carton and then wrap transparent tape (not duct tape) around the box at least twice in every direction.

It is vital, but easy to forget, to fix a packing list and an address label to every box. Be wary of using post-it notes to convey important information, but they are handy for personal notes like 'put this in last' - once loaded it does not matter whether the post-it notes fall off.

If you are only sending packages occasionally, you can buy your envelopes, tubes, boxes and shipping supplies at the shipping office or post office as and when you need them, but if packaging and shipping is going to become part of your (business) life, then you might as well get all the equipment yourself.

You can get all the boxes and shipping supplies that you need on the Internet. If you are selling jewellery for example, buy small boxes and Jiffy bags in bulk. If your items are larger, you will need a roll of bubble wrap, a tape dispenser and a shrink wrap dispenser too.

Having your own boxes and shipping supplies will not cost a lot, but it will save you quite some time packaging and shipping and will allow you to personalize them too.
